Red Rock Canyon and Death Valley January, 2017

January 15, 2017
On to our January adventure. Tuesday January 17 we will fly out to Las Vegas and spend two days hiking at Red Rock Canyon. Friday the 20th, we will head to Death Valley. We will be hiking and searching the sites one last time (trip #3 to Death Valley) in Death Valley. We will be staying in Death Valley at the Furnace Creek Ranch.

We will not have phone service, but will be checking emails. I will try to post at least every other day as time and internet connections allow.

A little cool but sunny and went hiking at Red Rock Canyon. It is a Conservation property Managed by the Bureau of Land Management. Our National Park pass works here.

Some beautiful sights. Lots of people out there hiking. It is a 13 mile scenic drive and 19 different hikes along the way. Some are short and easy others are longer and more difficult. Hiked for a while with two other couples that were from the Las Vegas area. That was the Calico Tank trail. Wow, we had said we were not going to do any scrambling - But we did. Benji, the younger man of the two couples (probably 45 years old) helped Ken and I up a few spots. Scrambling up a few slants and walls.

Love the .colors of the rocks. Looks like someone painted the line right across. This is near the Calico Tanks

Formations of rock from wind, they look so smooth.

Look at the hooked shape rock behind us. This is on the Calico Tanks Trail

We anticipated warmer weather. The high today was 51 degrees. Was kind of chilly in the shaded areas.  See the ice below Ken?

Ken making it down. At least twice where we had gone up, later to go down we had to do part if it sitting to get down. Sandstone is slick in many of the places. Especially in the areas it was wet.

Here are three of the persons we hiked with for part of the morning. The guy with his back turned is the one that was our wayfinder  as this path was hardly ever marked. He is also the one who helped up some of the steeper walls.

Puddles and in some spots there were streams / creeks. .Most has a light layer of ice on it.

A bright colored lychen.

Ice crystals on some of the vegetation.

A couple of panoramic shots

Waterfall at the end of Lost Creek trail. Snow caps were beginning to melt some.

Red wood on the trunks of these bushes.

At the edge along the Pine Creek Canyon trail.

90 % chance of rain on Thursday. So we still need to decide what we are going to to. Won't be out hiking.  Friday we head for Death Valley.
