Organic Olive Garden

Friday while we were transferring from Taormina to Ragusa we stopped at an Olive farm that has been run by the same family for 300 years. Some of the trees are as old as 1000 years. We tasted the olive oil and it was very interesting. We learned that much of the olive oil we buy in the stores is not all olive oil, but probably mostly other stuff.

This is the entry arch to the Olive farm. It was occupied by the Germans in WWII. Above this was a tower that was blown off.
The tree in front here is 1000 years old. They continue to trim them so new branches grow as young ones to produce. They produce olives every other year. They pick them for olive oil October/November. While they produce less oil then it is a better quality oil.
Flowering of the branches is just ending and the olives are just beginning to form.

This is the stone used to crush the olives. These olives when made to oil, smell of tomatoes, yes really. And when you put a little in your mouth and suck it through your teeth, it brings out a strong pepper taste. Amazing.
Here is the lunch we had prepared for us at the olive garden.
